It seems that some search engines are reading my site as two different ones, one as www.hmewrk4u.com and the other as hmewrk4u.com. It has been suggested that I put a "301 redirect" on one of the pages so they know it is one website, not two different ones. Although this does make sense to me.... :PWhere and how do I do this? The other problem is an RSS feed? I thought I had that already. I used Ipower to analyze my site and for the most part it is in pretty good shape but for these two small items. Nancy

Hi Nancy, I just typed 301 redirect into Google and went to the first site listed, and near the bottom of that page it mentions how to add info to your .htaccess file inside your public_html root directory so that domain.com will redirect to www.domain.com (substitute your own domain name for domain.com). The page can be found here: www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.phpIt is the section titled "Redirect to www (htaccess redirect)". Perhaps that is what you're looking for. Regarding RSS feeds, I have not messed with RSS at all up until this point so I'm not sure what you would need to do, however I think if you have a blogging web application such as Wordpress installed on your site then it should provide a RSS feed for you. If it doesn't then it may be a setting in its configuration, and/or you may need to add a piece of code to your web site for this feature to be available. Having said that however, I just went and took a quick look at your site and didn't see an RSS feed button or anything, but I did see at the bottom that you have a couple of links to your blogs. However, the blogs appear to be hosted on the blogger.com site, rather than on your own site. Thus, any RSS feed features would likely be available on your blogs themselves on that outside site, rather than on your own web site. Maybe it's possible to add a RSS feed button to your web page regardless with a piece of code, I'm not sure...like I said, I don't have any experience with RSS feeds and blogging, it's something I haven't had time to mess around with up to this point. You would have to investigate blogger.com to see if that is possible, or someone else here may have that answer. One thing I did notice was the following two images missing in your right column: images/dime.gif (near the top) images/pkimprosperity.jpg (about 2/3 or 3/4 of the way down the page) You will need to either upload those image files or correct your links to them. Hope this helps. Troy

Hi Nancy,
Add this to your .htaccess file in your public_html folder.
Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.yourdomain.com[NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://yourdomain.com$1 [L,R=301]
If you want your site to be with the www. then use: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yourdomain.com[NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yourdomain.com$1 [L,R=301]

Thanks so much for the above information. I was about to ask for help with 301 redirect. I believe this question is going to be coming up quite often in the coming year. Here's an exalt! The other problem is an RSS feed? I thought I had that already. Nancy Nancy - Troy is correct that if you have a blog then it will create an RSS feed for you - but to make it easier for you to manage your RSS feeds and RSS subscriptions I suggest using a free service called feed burner www.feedburner.comThey will walk you through the easy setps of setting up a RSS feed and then putting the code on your site so that people can subscribe to your feed to get your posts sent to them automatically. I hope that helps Chris

Great Help Troy & Ken,
I was getting ready to start looking for this also.
In the new Vdeck is a link to a website that will rate yours and one of the red flags for needing improvement is the 301 problem.
Thanks Again

Thanks for the .htaccess file code, Ken. I just looked at the page that I linked to in my first post above, and that is actually the exact same code I was referring to there as well. I guess great minds really do think alike ;D Thanks also Chris for the confirmation on RSS feeds and blogs, as well as the link to FeedBurner. I was hoping that yourself or someone else experienced with blogs would be able to add to my post above since it is not an area that I have delved into yet. If only I had more time for everything I'd like to do... Troy

If only I had more time for everything I'd like to do... Troy I second that! I have got tot he point where I am starting to farm stuff out because I know I want to do it so that my business grows but I don't have time to learn it or implement it. There is so much to do and so much opportunity - but there is only one of me.

I'm not sure what the difference is but I used the code Ken listed and the website grader (under the marketing module) in the new Vdeck stated my site still didn't have a 301 redirect. So I googled it. and this is what I found: Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine on rewritecond %{http_host} ^domain.com [nc] rewriterule ^(.*)$ www.domain.com/$1 [r=301,nc] Like I said I don't know what the difference is really, they are very similar but the website grader removed the red flag after I changed the codes around. Thought I would let you know. Also before I added this code the Website Grader gave me a 17/100 afterwards it gave me a 21/100. So it must be true I had inbound links going to both domain listings.

A Further follow up. Like I stated above I place that code in and it satisfied the website grader, Well that code somehow prevents people from getting to a sub domain index page as well. Thought I would let you know. I think in the mean time I will just php redirect domain.com to www.domain.com. ****At first I thought this was interfering with my site, but It seems the tech dept was either working on my website or it was server wide. Any php script was ineffective for a while today, even wordpress. Everything seems to be in order now.

The same thing happened to me. Weird, but the new one worked. For some reason I put the rss feed on, but it does not see it. I wonder why. It's working okay. Thank You to everyone who contributed to this topic. Very good information as always on this forum. Mike C.

With the code I found on google, further trial and error shows: If you have an Index page in a sub folder, when it is shown in your web browser it will default to domain.com/subfolder/index.htmlSo if you are using the code like this: Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine on rewritecond %{http_host} ^domain.com [nc] rewriterule ^(.*)$ www.domain.com/$1 [r=301,nc] Your sub folder index page will not work since it is redirecting everything to www.domain.com. To fix it I changed the first and second domain listings so everything now points to domain.com or: Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine on rewritecond %{http_host} ^www.domain.com [nc] rewriterule ^(.*)$ domain.com/$1 [r=301,nc] Thought I'd let you know. Hi Michael,
I had copied the code from my .htaccess and it left out the "RewriteEngine on" ( I had it on in another line).
That's why it didn't work.

Hi Michael, I had copied the code from my .htaccess and it left out the "RewriteEngine on" ( I had it on in another line). That's why it didn't work. Ken, I used your code and added the RewriteEngine on, but web site grader still thinks that I don' have a redirect. Strange. I notice that when I type in my website without the www it still comes up. I'm assuming that is the way it's suppose to be. I do have the code below the compressions and error code you gave me before which is: php_flag zlib.output_compression on php_value zlib.output_compression_level 9 ErrorDocument 404 www.yourdomain.com/index.phpI am assuming where you have it in the .htaccess file does not matter. Let me know if you or anyone else has any ideas. Michael my site worked okay with the other code, but when I went to publish a wordpress document it had issues so I took it out. The code did pass the web site grader though. Strange. I want mine to be the www so I can't use your new version. I'm sure we will get it figured out. At least our site is up an running. Mike C
