HELP!

Can someone please tell me what is going on. I haven't done anything to my website in the last week, other than taking DEB and TOPS off my site. Then this morning Cindi PM'd me and said that my page in Explorer is all messed up. I looked and sure enough it is a mess. It looks fine in Firefox, but you wouldn't believe what it looks like in Explorer. And I am not sure how to fix it other than redoing my whole site. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Nancy,
I had a problem like yours which Troy and Ken were able to help me with. I was missing code that Explorer needed but Firefox compensates for.
Hopefully one of those guys will be along soon.

Nancy Google cached your site on January 21 and it didn't look good then, either.
It looks to me like a minor table code error that causes major headaches, but somebody better than me will have to find it.

SandiIf you saved the page before you made the changes just do the following: 1. rename current to something else. 2. rename saved copy to current copy 3. make the two changes again 4. save and upload. You can probably pull the changes from the current version so you don't have to type it again. Good Luck. Mike C P.S. I think you may have already fixed it.

HELP!

Thanks guys,
I had checked the page on Thursday, and it looked all right. Why it was messed up on the 21st and then ok on the 24th I don't know as I did nothing with that page until Thursday afternoon, when I took TOPS and DEB off.
I don't use Adsense, so I don't think it could be that.
I don't have a backup from before the 20th, I backup every night, and everything gets overwritten.
I have checked the code from Firefox to Explorer and can pick out a difference. I am sure there is one, and will keep checking, but so far have not found it.
I wish Explorer would get on board and make theirs more user friendly like Firefox.
Thanks again, for all your help. I will keep plugging away at the code to find the error.

Nancy Nancy, If you are using tables...I would suggest doing the following: 1. Make a back up copy 2. cut the table out with the changes you recently made You should be able to get the bad code out. That has always been a major fear of mine. Just a suggestion...when I work on my code I load it up ...then I go back and rename the current file to xxx.xx012501 for example. As I make changes today it would go to xxx.xx012502 and so forth. All you have to do is hit the save button and the loaded file will save with the correct name. I hope this helps, because I can feel your pain. That's always a fear of mine especially when we are paying for PPC. Mike C

;DThanks Mike, I am working on it now, and I did find some bad code, that I never noticed before...I will have it fixed in a few hours...I hope. I had planned on doing others things today. I would help if I knew how the bad code got there, when it was working fine last week, and like I said I didn't do anything to the site until this Thursday. What do the Internet higher ups do sprinkle bad code through the airwaves and it hits those sites where the owners are less likely to know what to do. Then they sit up there and laugh at all us mere internet mortals. That's something to think about. Nancy

HELP!

Post by troyzone on Jan 26, 2008 13:25:27 GMT -5
Hi Nancy,
I'm at work, but took a quick look at your site...I've seen problems like this before with whole sections missing, and it's usually from a comment ending tag missing from your code. I searched your source code for comment starting tags <!-- and comment ending tags --> and you are missing an ending tag for the second section that has comment tags around it.
Internet Explorer reads the comment starting tag <!-- and interprets the following code to all be contained within a source code comment (ignored from display in the browser) until it encounters a comment ending tag --> later in your source code.
In this case, the ending comment tag is missing, so it is not until the next commented out section, a script for ISO Responder, where it actually encounters an ending comment tag at the end of that section.
Scripts usually have comment tags around them so that older browsers that don't recognize the script don't display their actual source code on the web page...newer browsers know how to handle them.
Take a look at the following section near the top of your source code:
<!-- // Edit the urlAddress and pageName variables below to your own var urlAddress = "http://www.hmewrk4u.com"; var pageName = "Top Work At Home Directory"; function addfavorites() { if ((navigator.appName == "Microsoft Internet Explorer") && (parseInt(navigator.appVersion) >= 4)) { window.external.addfavorite(urlAddress,pageName); } else if (navigator.appName == "Netscape") { window.sidebar.addPanel(pageName,urlAddress,""); } else { alert("Please press CTRL-D(Netscape) or CTRL-T(Opera) to Bookmark this site!"); } } // --</script><table
The problem is with the very last line of this section. It is missing one character, a > symbol. Thus, to the browser it no longer looks like a closing comment tag -->, it just looks like a couple of dashes -- instead.
As to IE not being as forgiving as Firefox, I usually find it to be the other way around...but basically it depends on the nature of the problem. Different browsers interpret code differently (I know they shouldn't really, but they do...), so some errors IE handles better, while other errors Firefox handles better.
Hope this helps.

;DTroy, I would give you my first daughter but she is taken!
Thank you so much! I knew it was something that simple as a missing code, but it would have taken me all day to find it.
Thanks so much!

Nancy ;D lol Nancy...I'm single too ;D You're welcome, I'm glad that fixed the problem. I know I've said this before, but it's amazing how drastic of a difference to your site that a single missing or extra character in your source code can make. Troy saves the day once again. I love the guy ;D I am glad your site is up again! Cindi Thanks Cindi, I appreciate your comments as well. I'm glad that I could help. Take care. Troy
