I like to think of colors on a website like music in a movie. A scene in a movie is designed to connect with it is audience and have them laugh, cry, get excited, enlightened, shocked. The acting and visual elements of the scene are scripted and edited carefully to get the desired reaction, however without the right music the scene would simply not be effective. I think you know where I’m coming from here, as most of you will have seen a movie or two. Just to make my point however, I want you to think of Star Wars and the scene where Darth Vader struts forward along the line of stormtroopers. Now instead of the famous orchestral music thumping out the speakers, think of music from Mary Poppings, tinkering along. I don’t think Darth would seem quite so intimidating, do you ?
So colors are important on a site and they are needed to create the right mood for your site. So if you want your site to be buzzing, bright and exciting, You will need to choose a color scheme that suits. If you want it to be more business and corporate looking then the colors should reflect this. Now I’m not going to tell you what colors you should use, as this is for you to decide. The idea of this is to get you thinking a lot more about the colors on your site and the image you want it to portray. How do you want your visitors to react when they visit your site.
I don’t want you to spend a massive amount of time comparing colors, cutting out swatches, painting different patches of color on the walls. I just want you to put some thought into deciding on a color scheme and then sticking to it when putting the site together. Think about the content of the site and the colors that will come from the graphics and images You will be using. What kind of background would compliment them, help make the Ads stand out.
The guidelines I stick to are :

The guidelines I stick to are :
- Less is more. Occasional splashes of stronger colors rather than big blocks of solid color.
- Backgrounds should be just that, in the background. Don’t make them so interesting or intense that they take the emphasise off the content.
- Consistency in sections. Keep titles and sub-titles the same sizes and colors, unless there is a specific reason for different colors. Such as it is a good way to make it obvious to a visitors that there are three different sections.
- Think about the mood and the way you want visitors to view your business. Fun, light and happy-go-lucky, or corporate serious business. Visit this excellent thread in the forum that our successful friend Chris Stirling kindly posted for some excellent tips on this:
