My story for today is:
I think most everyone knows I work part time for a large real estate firm in North Carolina. Yesterday they fired 15 people and one of them was my boss that has worked for this company for 19 years. She got to work - 2 honchos went upstairs - fired her - then went downstairs and had boxes for her to pack her stuff and walked her out to the car. I have been in total shock today - and a roller coaster of feelings for the company I work part time for.
This just encourages that we all need to stick with this and work harder than ever to make it work!!
Just had to express my opinions and feelings for today.

Zeta,
That is a real bummer! Especially for the ones out of work.
I know that rollercoaster of feelings all too well. The last 3 companies I worked for closed their doors and put all of their workers out of a job.
I was with my previous employer for 7 years. In 2001, right before Christmas, they laid off about 40 employees... which was 1/3 of the company. Then in 2005, the week after Thanksgiving they laid off another 44 employees... once again, it was 1/3 of the company.
Both times, there was no prior notice and the layoffs were immediate. Just like in your case, the employees were given boxes and were required to exit with all of their belongings by the end of the day.
Then the first week of January 2007 they closed their doors for good... giving everyone about 4 days notice. They had just over 60 employees.
Employement can sure be brutal at times. I am currently employed with a very large medical device company, so there is little chance that the company will go belly up and close their doors. But there is always the reality of going in one day and not having a job. There is no such thing as a permanent job, especially this day and age.
The time spent getting and keeping your online business in profit is time well spent...

A job should always encourage a person to start their own part time business.
Thank god many of us have taken action with the TOPS training because it is the best home based online business opportunity that is out there.
I see a lot of people who think that starting a small side business while having a job is way too risky. I always say that having a job and not having something on the side is too risky for anyone.
Imagine if you build a business that brings you OK money. One day you go to your JOB and your boss tells you that this will be your last week. How would you feel then? I am sure that you will be OK with the decision and know in the back of your mind that your income will not stop even though you are about to lose your JOB.

Zeta, How do you think I got into this business. That is exactly what happened to me, three years ago. The only difference is they waited until after lunch.

Zeta,
I am a Kansas gal, but I have lived much of my adult life in Wyoming. 10 years ago I moved to Denver and that city was booming. Real estate was the whole market. Now prices are falling and people are getting foreclosed on.
I worked in a law firm that did foreclosures and I had to quite because I couldn't live with myself writing legal documents that kicked people out of their homes.
Anyway, my husband and I moved back to Wyoming two years ago because Wyoming is now booming just like Denver. He works in the trades so everything is good for now. We have so many people moving here from other states, but what they don't understand is that Wyoming is a boom state. It always has been and always will be. The bottom will drop in a couple of years and these people will be stuck in a state where if you are not into working in the mines, you won't have a job.
It is sad to say the least, I am just glad you were spared.

Zeta, This probably is happening to people every day, we just don't hear about it. Like Tal says that having a job and not having something on the side is too risky for anyone. The income from our home based business has taken care of our financial needs when the 9-5 job couldn't make payroll. Remember this? erichw33.proboards53.com/index.cgi?board=wahs&action=display&thread=1169346354It still is motivation to work harder at this. Dot

Thanks for the comments everyone
Yes - I know it happens everyday, but it was just such a shock I had to express my opinions and to many people that didn't deserve it. If it would have been just 1 person it probably wouldn't have upset me as much, but to fire 15 people and many very close to me - needless to say it made me have a bad day.
Now they are having the ones they kept do a whole lot more (no extra pay) and it is a real mess.
I have hung on by listening to Dani Johnson and was blessed recently to go see her live in Atlanta. This is not an affiliate link, but a person that will definitely change your life if you want to listen to her. Danijohnson.com
Yes Dot I do remember that post - about a year ago. Are you still there?
Have a great and prosperous day everyone!

When I was young i have a thought that really bothers me, what's right between, "Think positive" and "Expect the worst ". I don't know how to apply it in my life... It saddened me when i read about your post Zeta, 'coz everything could happen to us like what happened to your boss... Guess we should be flexible by all means, so when life gets hard, we know how to get movin' on...

Yes, flexibility sure seems to be what works. I was in a hostile work environment and worked for one evening each, at two other places doing something that I did really as a hobby, as a contracted worker. It was worth doing just to know that I could break out into a new endeavor.
