Hopefully this is a simple fix.... I am almost ready for my 1st site eval for phase 1 however when i upload my page via either nvu or vdeck It appears twice as wide with reference to viewed in the nvu editor. I think all the settings for my tables are correct but than again I'm new at this.. I have tried everything I can think or read about. Please help. Thanks so much, steve www.provenworkathome.com

Hi Steve, it is a fairly easy fix, however there are a few things to do and it's all around changing the width of various components. Here's the step by step for you: 1. Open the page in NVU 2. Click on the header text "WORK AT HOME DIRECTORY" 3. Right-click and choose Table Cell Properties3. A window pops up and you'll see two tabs at the top, Table and Cells, click on the Table tab 4. In the Size section at the top, change the width from 100 to 7755. Change the dropdown box next to this from % of window to pixels6. A bit further down you'll see Table Alignment, make sure this is set to center7. Now click OK8. The text is now mis-aligned because you have spaces before and after it, so click before just before or after the text and either backspace or delete to get rid of the spaces. 9. Click anywhere in the middle column and follow steps 3 to 7 to change the width to 775px and center the table on the page. 10. Next, go to the very bottom of the page and follow steps 3 to 7 on the last table, which has the DAS statement in it. 11. OK, now lets sort out your side columns. For this we need to go to the Source tab, so click on this now. 12. We need to re-size the horizontal line images you have in the side columns as they are pushing them out too wide. 13. In the Source tab click on the Edit menu and choose Find and Replace14. Now type in (or copy from here) this line in the Find Text box: style="width: 163px; height: 3px;"15. Now copy this line into the Replace With box: style="width: 146px; height: 3px;" 16. Now hit the Replace All button and then Close17. Now we need to adjust the width of the TOP PICK image at the top of the left side column. So go back to the Normal tab. 18. Right-click on the TOP PICK image and choose Image and Link Properties from the menu 19. Now click on the Dimensions tab in the window that pops up 20. Change the width of the image to 146 pixels21. Click OKJust 5 images to sort out and we should be done!22. All the images I'm referring to now are in the middle column. You have a set of four big banner images under your Three In A Row ads table, it's the bottom two we need to adjust 23. The first one is the $924.73 a day Data Entry ad, Right-click, go to the properties and then the dimensions tab and change the width to 100 and % of cell24. Do the same for the SFI image next to this one. 25. Now move down the page to the three wide banner ads, just under the row of text ads, the top one of the three being the "Sell Candles" banner. 26. Change all three of these images to have a width of 450 pixels (you will have to select "custom" just above the size settings to allow you to change the widths) 27. Save it! You're done! This will sort out the width of your site, however there are a few observations I've made: - Although we told NVU to center the tables in the properties, it didn't seem to be putting in the align attribute in the code, which means it will align to the default of the web browser. For some the default is center and others it's left. To fix this, go into the Source code after you have made all the adjustments above and at the beginning of lines 11, 22 and 618 put in align="center"
- Check all your links, for instance on the bottom row of your Three In A Row ad table, you have an ad with the title "GAME PLAYER". The text links to ROI Rocket and the Click Here button links to SFI.
- The set of four ads that you have under the Three In A Row ads seem a bit squashed up and would probably not do you any favors as far as professionalism and also click through, if they cannot read the ads properly they most likely will not click on them. Making the table width 775px as above has squashed them in, but when I looked at reducing the height to make all the dimensions of the picture look right, it was too small to read. Maybe OK on a 800x600 screen, but not much good on higher resolutions.
Hope that's all clear and helps, Regards, Jim

Jim
You really went the extra mile in detailing what was needed to help this individual. We have the best moderators of any online Forum. I may be a little prejudice but I have never seen the kinds of help given here... at other Forums...
I am proud to be a small part of this.
Take Care

Hi Jim, I agree with Erich, you gave a great step by step explanation to fix the web site issues above. I read it from work earlier today and was very impressed...your last karma came from me then. Tom has gotten a few from me as well. I had been responding to a good number of the technical posts for the past little while, but lately you and Tom have been getting quite a few of them and I'm pleased about this, as it takes some of the pressure off of me ;D Particularly since I've had less time than usual here lately. I haven't been getting on the forum as much as usual from work the last little while, and the past few days I've been struggling off and on with trying to recover data from a failing hard drive in my secondary computer here and transfer it to a new drive, but it's been giving me a lot of trouble and still is. I'm hoping I'll finally conquer the hard drive issue tonight, but then I'm out of town for a couple of days, then back to work again...the fun never ends I'll be checking in when I can from my laptop of course though. Anyway, great work Jim on this and other posts and to Tom on a few others...as Erich said, between a few techies, some other members with great marketing advice, and still others who provide great general support and site reviews, we have quite an outstanding team here I can honestly say that I have never seen this level of teamwork and goodwill on any other forum on the 'net, anywhere. Keep up the great work everyone! Troy

Keep up the great work everyone! Troy Hi Troy, I think your Karma shows a bit of what you do here in the forum, but your work here goes far beyond the 80's or 90's in my opinion. You never seem to sleep and the detail you go into on your posts always impresses me. It's good that you are getting a bit of a break from the forum though, unfortunately it's not really a break though if the time is spent agonizing over a frustrating hard-drive problem. I've been there on a previous laptop and I sympathize 100%. It's great that we have a few HTML proficient members here, just think how difficult this would be without anyone knowing much about HTML! Everytime I log into the forum there is a recent post from either you, Ken, Tom or a 3PP Manager, helping someone on a web design question. As you pointed out, a real strength here is the mix of knowledge and understanding. You won't see me in Advertising & Marketing much, mainly because most of my time spent here is answering HTML stuff that takes time to figure out, but also because I know there are many more here that have a much better grip and understanding on this subject than me. Right, back to Dreamweaver, got some coding to do! Regards, Jim

Thanks Jim, I'm the same way. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and I don't always have time to answer every question I see so I usually focus on the more technical ones, as there are less people available that can answer those and they often do take qutie a bit of time to figure out. As you said, other members are more proficient with other aspects of 3PP such as advertising and so forth, so I usually let one of them answer such posts and I can learn from their answers as well. I'll answer any that I'm able to though of course when I can. Just a quick side note, I did finally get my hard drive issue sorted out last night, so that box now has a new hard drive that is up and running and the old one has been removed. The nice thing about it is it's a warranty replacement, so the new drive didn't cost me anything. Normally I'd have to send the old drive to the manufacturer, but since I work in a shop, I did the exchange on paper at work and got a replacement drive in advance from our stock, so I was able to transfer the data from the old drive to the new one before having to give the old drive up and send it away. One of the perks of being a techie I guess The shop can keep whatever the manufacturer sends us back as a replacement drive. An added bonus is I upgraded from an IDE to a SATA drive in the process since we didn't have an equivalent size IDE drive in stock (oh darn). I've had many bad hard drives over the years in my various computers, including one in my laptop less than a year ago and also the year before that. This six-year old laptop is on its third hard drive now I'd really like to get a whole new laptop someday when I can afford it. Steve - Congrats on getting your site issues fixed, I knew Jim's great step by step instructions would do the trick for you. Troy
