Long before my mom passed away (1989), she gave me a copy of a poem entitled "Promise Yourself". I liked it so much that I folded it up and carried in my wallet wherever I went. I have long since forgotten about the piece of paper with that poem on it.
The other day while doing some daily cleaning, I found a folded up piece of paper on my counter in the kitchen. It was yellowed, stained and tore apart as I unfolded it. It was that poem my mom gave me. I have no idea how it got on my counter. I can't remember the last time I'd seen it. No one in my family had a clue. It was just "there".
I like to think it was my mom trying to tell me something. That "she" fished it out from wherever I had it, and left it for me to read.
Anyway, I thought I would share this poem with you.
Promise Yourself
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look on the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and to have a smile for every living creature you meet.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticise others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world-not in loud words but in great deeds.
To live in the faith that the world is on your side so long as you are true to the best that is in you.
