I saw a program the other night on the history channel "Decoding the Past" in which several different sources predicted something catestrophic would happen on the winter solstice of the year 2012.
Here is a description of the program:
There are prophecies and oracles from around the world that all seem to point to December 21, 2012 as doomsday. The ancient Mayan Calendar, the medieval predictions of Merlin, the Book of Revelation and the Chinese oracle of the I Ching all point to this specific date as the end of civilization. A new technology called "The Web-Bot Project" makes massive scans of the internet as a means of forecasting the future... and has turned up the same dreaded date: 2012. Skeptics point to a long history of "Failed Doomsdays", but many oracles of doom throughout history have a disturbingly accurate track record. As the year 2012 ticks ever closer we'll speculate if there are any reasons to believe these doomsayers.
The ancient Mayan calendar [which many scientists say is more accurate than the calender we use today] predicts the world as we know it... will end on 12/21/12. The date, December 21, 2012, is a special day. It represents the maximum possible influences for solar flares that the universe can provide. Undoubtedly the Mayans, or the civilization that influenced them, somehow knew about these things. See:

I'm not one to put a lot of creedance in predictions of the world coming to an end but I must admit there are several "coincidences'" which all seem to point to this same day.
The number 12 has always had special meaning in our culture since there are:
12 months
12 jurors for a trial
12 tribes of Israel
12 disciples of Christ
Can anyone think of any others??
It would seem like the date 12/12/12 would be a date the "predictors" would focus on but apparently that date doesn't fit into the star equation...
We can be sure of one thing... the closer we get to this date... the more we will see people giving their own take on this. AND there will be some who will figure out a way to make money on this just as the History Channel did when they sold ads for the above program...
The information is all out there for anyone to make their own prediction. We can look at it as a serious debate or something fun to kick around and use as a topic for conversation at parties...etc. I personally prefer the latter. Though I plan to keep my eyes and ears open for some more credible evidence this day will be no different than today or any other day...
