Public Domain Clip Art
I found this site to be really useful. There are literally hundreds of images, all in the public domain, which means you are free to use them as you wish. Many are kind of big and all are in the .png format, but I have tweaked some of them in Gimp to make them suitable.
Trust me when I tell you that if I can do it, you can do it.
Have fun playing with your website! ;D

Sandi, that is a nice find. There is a boat load of images on that site. I'm glad to see you are getting the hang of GIMP... it is not really that hard to use once you get the feel of it and it's a great no-cost substitute for photoshop.
